Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.
